Various seafood such as shrimp, squid, and crabs are often considered to be causes of high cholesterol. Therefore, people who already know that they have high cholesterol levels usually avoid seafood. In fact, there are actually several types of seafood that can help you cope with high cholesterol.

Not all seafood triggers an increase in cholesterol. If you have cholesterol and the three types of seafood below are written on your "black list", maybe it's time you delete them. Because these three types of seafood, if consumed will be beneficial for sufferers of high cholesterol.

1. Salmon and tuna

Salmon and tuna are two types of fish that contain lots of omega-3s. Instead of causing high cholesterol, omega-3 contained in the two fish can actually help reduce bad cholesterol (also known as LDL or low-density lipoprotein) and increase good cholesterol (known as HDL or high-density lipoprotein). Another type of fish that is also rich in omega-3s is mackerel.

Although it is good for consumption of people with high cholesterol, fish processing must be considered. Avoid frying fish because this method of cooking will eliminate more than 50 percent of the omega-3 content in fish. You can also process fish by grilling, steaming, or making soup. For salmon, if you believe the quality of the fish is very good, eating it raw (ala sashimi or poke bowl) is also good for health.

2. Shellfish

You love shellfish? Judging from its nutrition, shellfish is one type of seafood that is rich in vitamin B12, calcium, iron, and high phosphorus content. Vitamins and minerals the body needs for growth as well as healthy bones and nerves.

Do shells contain cholesterol? Yes. However, various studies have found that cholesterol contained in shellfish is difficult to absorb by the intestine, so that most of the cholesterol from shellfish will be excreted by the body through feces.

Unlike the way to eat salmon, you should not eat shellfish that are not cooked. Some shellfish contain Vibrio vulificus which can cause food poisoning. The best way to cook clams is by steaming or boiling them.

3. Shrimp and lobster

Shrimp and lobster is one of the most favorite seafood because of its delicious taste. However, both shrimp and lobster are often considered to be causes of high cholesterol. This is not entirely true. Why?

On the one hand, shrimp and lobster do contain cholesterol. However, on the other hand these foods also contain high omega-3s. Omega-3 is able to neutralize bad cholesterol in the blood. In addition, shrimp and lobster also contain selenium and iron which are quite high — both of which are highly needed by the body to maintain the immune system so that it does not get sick easily.

How to cook shrimp and lobster also need attention. So that cholesterol is not more, avoid consuming it by frying. Boiling or steaming will provide better nutrition. You can also saute it with olive oil or sunflower oil.

So not all seafood causes high cholesterol. However, even though the three seafoods mentioned above are rich in nutrients and can help overcome high cholesterol, don't let your guard down, and still know the limits in consuming them. So as not to cause cholesterol levels to surge, seafood should be consumed no more than three times a week and portions no more than 150 grams. Also be sure to process seafood properly.
