Diabetes is a disease that describes the condition of the high amount of blood sugar in the body. The body cannot produce enough insulin and process the glucose consumed, eventually entering and settling in the bloodstream. This causes a spike in blood sugar levels.
Research published in 2003 in Diabetes Care found that cinnamon can help increase glucose and lipid levels in patients with type 2 diabetes. Consuming up to 6 grams (g) of cinnamon a day can reduce serum glucose, triglycerides, LDL cholesterol, and total cholesterol in 60 people with type 2 diabetes.
The researchers suggest that if people with type 2 diabetes incorporate cinnamon into their diet, it can reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease. Even so, researchers are still researching more about the benefits of cinnamon to control blood sugar.
How Can Cinnamon Manage Diabetes?
Cinnamon can stimulate cells for glucose consumption. Consuming cinnamon increases insulin release from the pancreas and increases insulin sensitivity which helps in glucose processing. Cinnamon contains several anti-diabetic compounds that help reduce the rate at which glucose enters our bodies. Cinnamon helps in maintaining fasting blood sugar levels in people suffering from type 2 diabetes. Cinnamon can improve the digestive system, which is directly linked to the problem of diabetes. A healthy digestive tract will process, digest sugar, and get rid of excess sugar to keep blood sugar levels under control.
